Okay, firstly we have to say that this novel was just filled with lots of action and shocking surprises! We weren’t quite sure about this novel going into it as we hadn’t previously read books written by this author. We can happily say that we were really caught off guard by this novel, we are still just so pleasantly surprised by it!
This novel follows the leading character Vala, a girl who is feared by many due to her appearance as it is believed that she has been scorched and perhaps cursed by magic. Her scorched, rough skin burns anything with just a single touch. She was soon recognised as an asset to the royal family, as part of the prince’s guard.
Whilst reading this really intriguing novel, we found that we really enjoyed the characters and how they grew within themselves in each situation throughout the plot. If we are being completely honest, we did find it hard at first to get into the novel as we found the beginning a little rushed however. Over the course of this novel, there was definitely an improvement in pace.
This novel was just so action packed! We were sitting on the edge of our seats right to the very end. The characters relationships and plot development were really planned out and developed, even though the plot seemed very fast paced. We really enjoyed the romance in this novel. Without giving anything away, we just really loved how the characters noticed each other’s differences in appearances and personalities. They didn’t discriminate each other. Although appearing very different, they welcomed each other with their traits and abilities.
The writing of this novel was just so exciting and really creative. We couldn’t put this novel down, we just had to keep reading to see what was going to happen next! This is meant to be a first book to a trilogy which we will definitely be on the lookout for. We will be waiting quite eagerly to see where the author will take the series next!
Although we really enjoyed this novel, we just wish we had more background information on the character Vala and the history of the kingdom. However, this information might be introduced in the second novel. We do feel as though this novel was similar to some books that we have read before in regards to the plot. However, the book was just so unique and exciting to read!
There was just so many situations in this novel that left us in shock. The writing in the novel really just gripped us from the beginning! We felt so many mixed emotions whilst reading this novel. In different stages of the book, our emotions were a mixture of being excited, intrigued, being thrilled and heart-broken.
Overall, we really enjoyed this novel. We recommend this novel for those of you who enjoy quick fantasy reads!
